Do You Have An Eye Infection? 3 Signs That You Might

by Vernon Chambers

Eye infections can be caused by any number of things, including touching bacteria and rubbing your eyes, or you could have an eye infection due to an injury that wasn't treated properly. It could also become infected if you are not taking good care of your eyes, such as over-wearing your contact lenses or never cleaning them. Whatever the reason, if you suspect you have an eye infection, you should seek treatment immediately to prevent it from worsening or spreading to others. If you aren't sure what the signs are for an eye infection, read on for some signs you need to watch out for.

1. You Have Discharge

You typically have natural discharge coming out of your eyes daily, but if you have a lot of discharge, or your eyes are oozing with green or yellow-tinged discharge, it is more than likely an infection that you need to have looked at. If your eyes are crusted in the morning when you wake up, or it occurs during the day, you should have this looked into by a professional optometrist. The discharge will only worsen, and you could have so much that you have difficulty opening your eyes.

2. Your Eyes Are Red And Swollen

If your eyes are red and swollen, it may also be a sign of an infection. Redness and swelling aren't usually normal with your eyes on a daily basis, although they could be red from an allergy or from some other sort of irritant. However, if they are red and puffy, or even itchy, it could be the sign of an eye infection and you should have it looked at if you are in any doubt.

3. Your Eyes Itch

If you have extremely itchy eyes, in addition to the other signs mentioned above, it could be a sign of an eye infection. Pink eye for instance can be very itchy and can spread easily from one person to the next because once you rub your eyes and touch someone or something, the bacteria can spread quickly. You need to resist rubbing your eyes and wash your hands often throughout the day to prevent spreading it around.

If you suspect you have an eye infection, you should seek treatment from a professional optometrist. You need to get treated for the condition to prevent it from worsening or spreading the infection to others. Depending on the type of infection and the cause, it may be able to spread around quickly, especially in children. If you are in doubt, make an appointment to have your eyes examined.

I did my research regarding the kinds of training eye doctors typically received, and then looked for a professional that really exceeded the expectations required of him. I was able to find an amazing eye doctor that had years of treating the same condition my child had, and it was really comforting to know that he could help them. My optometrist has made my child's disability management much more straightforward. Check out these posts to learn how to find a better eye doctor.
